2018 MoSt Poetry Workshops Start June 9th!

The first MoSt Summer Poetry Workshop is happening on June 9 from 1:00-3:00 at the downtown Modesto library!

Crowd-Sourced Poetry, also known as Exquisite Corpse, is a collaborative poetry game that has roots in the Surrealist movement. In this workshop, you’ll have fun and experience surprise by being part of a team effort where all of us contribute parts to each others’ work. You can use the result as a springboard to a different poem, revise your collaborative poem, or have fun with the poem as-is.

We hope to see you there! Check out the flyer for our other upcoming poetry workshops.

Second Tuesday @ Barkin’ Dog

The 9th Anniversary edition of the Second Tuesday Poetry Reading is happening on June 12 at 6:00 at the Barkin’ Dog!

Our featured readers are the Modesto branch of the National League of America Pen Women. Founded in 1936, the original five charter members of this branch were Alice Scott Carlson, Grace M. Davis, Irene Childrey Hoch, Blanche Willis Allen, and Helen Hope Page.

The tradition continues with a host of talented writers and artists, including those reading at the Barkin’ Dog on June 12th: Nancy Haskett, Lynn Hansen, ann w. bailey, Louise Kantro, Roberta Bearden, Jill Adler, Cleo Griffith, Pat Egenberger, and Linda Prather.

Join us for a great evening of poetry and community!

MoSt Brings Poetry to Schools!

MoSt Board member Sal Salerno delivers books to Las Palmas Elementary School (April 2018).

Did you know that your donations to the Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center help us increase the amount of poetry in elementary school students’ lives? One of our new efforts to promote poetry in Stanislaus County is Poetry Books for Schools, in which we donate brand-new sets of poetry books to school libraries around the county. Our plan, over time, is to gift poetry books to every one of our schools.

In the past year, we have donated stacks of new poetry books to:

Don Pedro Elementary (Ceres)
Empire Elementary (Empire)
Keyes Elementary (Keyes)
Bret Harte Elementary (Modesto City Schools)
Barrington Elementary (Newman)
Cloverland Elementary (Oakdale)
Las Palmas Elementary (Patterson)
California Avenue Elementary (Riverbank)
Chrysler Elementary (Stanislaus Union)
Richard Moon Elementary (Waterford)
Gratton Elementary (Gratton), &
the Juvenile Hall Library.

If you’d like to donate to MoSt–and every little bit helps–please send a check to the address in the upper left sidebar or click the button to donate via PayPal!

5th Annual Benefit Gala

Please join us for Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center’s 5th Annual Benefit, April 22, 2018!

Our annual benefit will be held from 2-5 p.m. at the Barkin’ Dog Grill. Join us for an afternoon of music, food and drink, poetry fun and games, a silent auction, and supporting the arts in our area.

Tickets are just $10 this year, and they are available online at mostgala2018.eventbrite.co.uk or at the door! All proceeds will benefit the work of MoSt as we continue to promote poetry throughout Stanislaus County with poetry contests, the Modesto Poetry Festival, publications, poetry readings throughout the region, Poetry-on-the-Spot, and many other activities. See our Annual Gala page for photos of the fun we’ve had in previous years.
